Decided to go with Besco for soft water in our home. They sent Clyde to price it and Michael to install the unit. Both men were very knowledgeable and friendly. I had a wonderful experience with Besco Warer Treatment. I'm a seasonal resident and didn't know there were steps to take before closing up after the summer. As a result, I had horribly hard water on my return visit, my silver hair was stained yellow,... and some of my water lines were clogged with sediment. Mike, one of their technicians, went above and beyond to help me! He advised me on how to try and salvage my softener (that's not even their brand), and Besco tested my water every five or six days to see if the hardness was changing. They could have sold me an iron filter (what I thought I needed), or told me my resin tank was shot, but they didn't. All told, it cost me $88 to get back up and running. I wasn't exactly a cash cow customer! I highly recommend this ethical company.read more

Cloudy Water: What It Is and How to Fix It

Have you ever turned on your faucet, filled a glass with water, and noticed it looked cloudy or milky? This lack of clarity in your drinking water can be disconcerting and may leave you wondering about its safety and quality. While the sight of cloudy water might make you hesitate before taking a sip, you’re not alone in encountering this common water issue.

Cloudy water, also known as turbid water, is typically caused by tiny air bubbles or suspended particles in your water supply. The cloudiness can range from a slight haziness to a distinctly milky appearance, affecting not only your water’s visual appeal but also its taste and usefulness for various household tasks. But what causes this cloudiness, and more importantly, how can you clear it up?

In this guide, we’ll explain what causes cloudy water, why it matters, and how you can fix it to get the clean, clear water you deserve in your home.

What Causes Cloudy Water?

  1. Air Bubbles: Sometimes, air gets trapped in water pipes, which causes temporary cloudiness that clears from the bottom up. According to USGS, “The water in the pipes coming into your house might be under a bit of pressure. This causes gases (air) that are dissolved in the pressurized water to come out as the water flows into your glass, which is under normal atmospheric pressure.”
  2. Tiny Particles: Suspended solids, such as small bits of sand, dirt, or clay, can float in water, making it look cloudy.
  3. Hard Water Minerals: Too much calcium and magnesium can make water cloudy.
  4. Methane Gas: In some well water, dissolved methane can cause cloudiness.
  5. Water Main Problems: If there’s been recent work on water pipes in your area, it might stir up sediment.

Temperature Changes: When cold water enters a warm pipe, it can create temporary cloudiness as gases come out of the water. According to The City of Fountain Valley, “When the cold water from the water mains outside comes inside our warm homes the water begins to warm and the oxygen has to escape. It does so by bubbling out in air bubbles which makes the water look milky. The presence of air can sometimes also be traced to pipeline repairs in the area.”

Why Cloudy Water Matters

According to the USGS, “Cloudy water, also known as white water, is caused by air bubbles in the water. It is completely harmless.” While cloudy water is often more of an aesthetic issue than a health concern, it can have several impacts:

  1. Appearance: The most obvious effect is the unappealing look of the water.
  2. Taste and Odor: Depending on the cause, cloudiness may be accompanied by off-flavors or odors.
  3. Staining: Suspended particles can lead to staining on clothes, fixtures, and appliances.
  4. Appliance Efficiency: Sediment can accumulate in water-using appliances, reducing their efficiency and lifespan.
  5. Filtration Systems: Excessive turbidity can clog filters more quickly, requiring more frequent replacements.

Indirect Concerns:

  • Cloudiness can sometimes mask other water quality issues.
  • In rare cases, persistent cloudiness could indicate contamination that needs immediate attention.

While cloudy water is typically not harmful to health, addressing its presence can significantly improve your water’s aesthetic quality and protect your plumbing and appliances. If you’re concerned about persistent cloudiness, you should test your water and consult a water treatment specialist for appropriate solutions.

Treatment Options

Clearing up cloudy water doesn’t need to be a complex process. Several effective methods can improve water clarity and overall quality. The most effective solution depends on identifying the specific cause of the cloudiness and considering your overall water system. Here are some common treatment options:

  1. Water Softeners: If hard water minerals are the culprit, a water softener can address the issue while providing other benefits.
  2. Activated Carbon Filtration: This can help improve taste and odor while addressing some types of cloudiness.
  3. Reverse Osmosis: For point-of-use treatment, reverse osmosis systems can provide extremely clear water for drinking and cooking.

Steps to Take to Address Cloudy Water

If you’re facing cloudy water issues for the first time or looking for a new solution, follow these steps:

  1. Observe the Cloudiness: Check if the cloudiness clears from bottom to top (air bubbles) or remains persistent (likely sediment or minerals).
  2. Test Your Water: Have your water professionally tested to determine the cause of cloudiness and check for other quality issues.
  3. Check All Faucets: Determine if the issue affects all water sources in your home or just specific faucets.
  4. Consult Your Water Provider: If you’re on municipal water, contact your local water department to see if there have been any recent disturbances or changes in the system.
  5. Flush Your Pipes: Run cold water for several minutes to see if the cloudiness clears.
  6. Consult Professionals: Based on your observations and test results, consult a professional water treatment company to determine the best solution for your situation.
  7. Implement Treatment: Install the recommended treatment system, ensuring it’s properly sized for your home’s water usage.
  8. Regular Maintenance: Once a treatment system is in place, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
  9. Monitor Water Quality: Conduct periodic water tests and visual checks to ensure the treatment remains effective over time.

Remember, cloudy water usually isn’t dangerous, but it’s good to fix it. Clear water looks better, protects your pipes and appliances, and gives you peace of mind about water quality.
