Decided to go with Besco for soft water in our home. They sent Clyde to price it and Michael to install the unit. Both men were very knowledgeable and friendly. Michael started working the minute he hit the driveway and didn't stop until he was done,... very impressive. This is an easy 5 stars.read more

I had a wonderful experience with Besco Warer Treatment. I'm a seasonal resident and didn't know there were steps to take before closing up after the summer. As a result, I had horribly hard water on my return visit, my silver hair was stained yellow,... and some of my water lines were clogged with sediment. Mike, one of their technicians, went above and beyond to help me! He advised me on how to try and salvage my softener (that's not even their brand), and Besco tested my water every five or six days to see if the hardness was changing. They could have sold me an iron filter (what I thought I needed), or told me my resin tank was shot, but they didn't. All told, it cost me $88 to get back up and running. I wasn't exactly a cash cow customer! I highly recommend this ethical company.read more

Earthy Taste/Smell in Water (Tannins)

Have you ever sipped water from your tap only to be met with an earthy or musty taste? In some cases, it can even taste like wet leaves or damp soil. Your drinking water’s distinctive taste and smell can be perplexing and off-putting. While an earthy smell in your water might be alarming, you’re not alone in experiencing this common water quality issue.

The earthy or musty taste and odor in water are typically caused by organic compounds called tannins. These naturally occurring substances can find their way into your water supply, affecting everything from your morning tea to the clarity of your tap water. But what exactly are tannins, where do they come from, and how can you eliminate them from your water?

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the science behind tannins, investigate their sources, and outline effective solutions to help you restore the crisp, clean water you deserve in your home or business.

Causes of Earthy Smell/Taste (Tannins) in Drinking Water:

  1. Decaying Vegetation: Tannins are often the result of water passing through peaty soil or decaying vegetation. According to WaterSystemsCouncil.org, “Tannins are a natural organic material that can be the byproducts of nature’s fermentation process, created as water passes through peaty soil and decaying vegetation.”
  2. Surface Water Sources: Lakes, rivers, and streams are more likely to contain tannins than groundwater sources.
  3. Shallow Wells: Wells drawn from shallow aquifers can be more susceptible to tannin contamination.
  4. Seasonal Changes: Tannin levels can fluctuate with seasonal changes, often increasing during rainy periods or spring thaws.
  5. Wetlands Proximity: Properties near wetlands or swampy areas may experience higher tannin levels in their water.

Impacts on Water Quality and Use

While tannins are generally not harmful to health, their presence in drinking water can have several impacts:

  1. Taste and Odor: Water tastes and smells earthy when organic matter contaminates it.
  2. Water Color: Tannins can give water a yellow or light brown tint. According to WaterBoards.ca.gov, “Color may also be affected by the concentration of natural dissolved organic acids such as tannins and lignins, which give water a tea color”
  3. Staining: They may cause yellowish stains on laundry, fixtures, and light-colored surfaces.
  4. Interference with Treatment: Tannins can interfere with the effectiveness of other water treatment processes.
  5. Reduced Efficiency: They may decrease the efficiency of water-using appliances over time.

Indirect Concerns:

  • Tannins can make detecting other water quality issues challenging due to color interference.
  • The organic nature of tannins can contribute to bacterial growth in water systems if not properly managed.

While tannins are not typically a health concern, addressing their presence in your water can significantly improve its look, taste, smell and overall usability. “If you’re concerned about tannins or other water quality issues, have your water tested,” says Operations Manager Brian Noble. You can do this yourself with an at-home kit, or you can consult with a water treatment specialist, like Besco Water, for appropriate solutions. Call us at (800) 964-0257 or complete our online form to request your free water analysis today.

Treatment Options

Dealing with tannins in your water doesn’t have to be an ongoing struggle. While there are several effective methods that can remove tannins, the right solution depends on the concentration of tannins, your overall water chemistry, and your specific needs. Here are some common treatment options that can help you bid farewell to that earthy taste and smell:

  1. Activated Carbon Filtration: While not always sufficient on its own, activated carbon can help reduce tannins and improve taste and odor.
  2. Reverse Osmosis: For point-of-use treatment, reverse osmosis systems can effectively remove tannins and other contaminants.

Chlorination: In some cases, proper chlorination can help oxidize and remove tannins, though this method requires careful management.

Steps to Take to Address Earthy Smell/Taste in Water

If you’re facing tannin-related water quality issues for the first time or looking for a new solution, follow these steps:

  1. Test Your Water: Have your water professionally tested to determine the exact concentration of tannins and other potential contaminants.
  2. Identify the Source: Determine whether the issue affects all water sources in your home or just specific faucets.
  3. Check Your Water Source: If you’re on well water, inspect your well and surrounding area for potential tannin sources.
  4. Consult Professionals: Based on the test results, consult a professional water treatment company to determine the best solution for you.
  5. Implement Treatment: Install the recommended treatment system, ensuring it’s properly sized for your home’s water usage.
  6. Regular Maintenance: Once a treatment system is in place, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
  7. Monitor Water Quality: Conduct periodic water tests to ensure the treatment remains effective over time and adjust as necessary.

Remember, while the earthy taste and smell caused by tannins can be unpleasant, they typically don’t pose immediate health risks. However, addressing the issue is important for improving your overall water quality and enjoyment.
